Two upcoming commencement ceremonies are of special interest to the Dartmouth community this year. The one of most interest, of course, will be Dartmouth's own on June 14 when Jean Lesage, Prime Minister of the Canadian Province of Quebec, will deliver the address at the College's 195th graduation ceremonies.
The other precedes it by one week and takes place in Lewisburg, Pa., at Bucknell University where President Dickey will deliver the Commencement Address. President Dickey will also be the recipient of the Doctor of Civil Laws honorary degree. One month before his Bucknell appearance, on May 7, President Dickey will be one of 25 prominent men and women to receive honorary degrees at an academic convocation marking the dedication of the Notre Dame University Memorial Library in Notre Dame, Ind.
Premier of Quebec since 1960, Mr. Lesage has served in Canadian government and politics since 1939 when at the age of 27 he became the youngest crown attorney in the history of Quebec. He was elected to the federal House of Commons in 1945 and was reelected in 1949, 1953, 1957, and 1958. He has also served his country as a member of the Canadian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, as head of the Canadian delegation to UNESCO, as parliamentary assistant to the Secretary of State for External Affairs and the Minister of Finance, and in cabinet posts as Minister of Resources and National Development and as the first Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources.
