Class Officers Weekend
JUNE 1964

ONE of the infallible signs of spring in Hanover is the annual return of the class officers to the campus in May. This year some 250 officers - chairmen, secretaries, treasurers, class agents, bequest chairmen, newsletter editors, and reunion chairmen — were back as guests of the College on May 1-2, and to greet them Hanover put on one of its most beautiful spring weekends. Many of the alumni and their wives were delighted to be able to come north and get warm.

The weekend opened Friday afternoon with a Hopkins Center coffee reception, which the reunion chairmen had to miss because they were meeting in the Buck Concert Lounge at the same hour to discuss plans for 1965. At a general gathering at 4 in the Studio Theater, class officers and wives heard talks about the Alumni College, by Chairman Ellis O. Briggs '21 and Director J. Michael McGean '49; Project ABC, by Associate Dean Charles F. Dey '52; the Summer Term, by Dean Waldo Chamberlin; and Admissions, by Edward T. Chamberlain '36, director of admissions.

A cocktail hour in the Top of the Hop preceded the annual banquet in Alumni Hall. Since more than 500 persons were at the dinner, the Drake Room and the Hanover Inn Tavern Room were both used to accommodate class groups of contemporary periods. The after-dinner program was held in 105 Dartmouth Hall, where Russell C. Dilks '5l, president of the Dartmouth Secretaries Association, presided. Alumni Awards from the Alumni Council were conferred on Herbert S. Talbot '25 and Osmun Skinner '28 (see their class columns for citations) and a report on Alumni Fund progress was given by Fund Chairman Charles F. Moore Jr. '25. The rest of the Dartmouth Hall program was given over to a panel discussion of "The Dartmouth Student Off-Campus," in which Dean Thaddeus Seymour, William W. Fitzhugh IV '64, Jeffrey Panitt '65, and Bob Booms '66 took part.

The various class officers' associations held their separate, annual meetings on Saturday morning in Hopkins Center. Presiding officers at the meetings were Frank L. Harrington Jr. '50, vice president of the Class Chairmen and Presidents Association; Warren G. Kreter '42, president of the Class Agents Association; Waldon B. Hersey '24, president of the Class Treasurers Association; Truman T. Metzel '23, president of the Bequest and Estate Planning Association; and SidClass Newsletter Editors Association.

Mr. Flanigan served as toastmaster at Saturday's stag luncheon in Alumni Hall. His introduction of President Dickey in the form of a prayer asking for protection from the trials and tribulations in a college president's life led to his on-the-spot appointment as Chaplain to the President of Dartmouth College.

Class officers' awards were announced at the luncheon by Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College. Those cited as officers of the year were Bequest Chairman Herbert A. Wolff '10, Class Newsletter Editor John L. Ferguson '15, Class Chairman Robert N. Stevens '27, Class Treasurer David J. Mandelbaum '54, and Class Secretary Stewart Sanders '56. Their citations will be found with their respective class columns in this issue.

Three Alumni Fund awards were also made. Fund Chairman Charles F. Moore Jr. '25 announced Charles I. Lampee 'O4 as winner of the James B. Reynolds Trophy, George B. Munroe '43 as winner of the Harvey P. Hood Trophy, and John J. Feldman '54 as winner of the John R. Mason Trophy. Their citations, detailing achievements in the 1963 Fund campaign, appear with their class columns.
