THE CAT IN THE HAT — BEGINNER BOOK DICTIONARY.

By the Cathimself (Theodor Seuss Geisel '25) andP. D. Eastman. New York: RandomHouse, Inc., 1964. 133 pp. $2.95.

What is Ted Geisel's share in this book? The cover says that it is "by the Cat himself and P. D. EASTMAN." Indications are that the Cat and Dr. Seuss are one. The latter began the "Beginner Book Series" and an early book was The Cat in the Hat. External evidence thus involves Dr. Seuss. Internally, he has written the introduction, a serious one without so much as a rhyme or an illustration. From there on P. D. Eastman takes over. Whether Dr. Seuss helped in the choice of words (he might have) no one knows. The illustrations and phrases, as attractive as they are, are completely foreign to him. To a Seuss fan this is a great blow. Poor Mr. Eastman becomes the victim of favoritism. In spite of this, he has composed a delightful dictionary of 1350 words. If you have children under 9, you would do well to look this over.
