Usually the Dartmouth Club of Maine notes are right on time but an error occurred on this one occasion. We can't let a certain meeting go unreported because it was so successful, well organized, and important. On December 10, our enrollment committee staged a "Sell Dartmouth Night" in the Eastland Motor Hotel at Portland, Me. We packed the Castine Room with Dartmouth alumni and wives, an outstanding group of high school students who had expressed an interest in Dartmouth, other high school students whom we wanted to introduce to the Dartmouth way of life, and their parents.
A color movie extolling the wonders of Dartmouth was shown with Robert J. Evans '49 representing the admissions department, speaking briefly on the film on the College and answering questions. After the meeting, coffee and doughnuts were served and everyone stayed to meet everyone else and enjoy the friendly atmosphere that had been created.
The purpose of the meeting was (1) to create a burning desire within the students to spend four years on the Hanover Plain by informing them about Dartmouth, its physical plant, its admission policies, its special programs, etc.; (2) to give each student a chance to meet some of the local alumni, and (3) to give each alumnus a chance to meet some of the local alumni and at the same time to keep abreast of activities in Hanover. The enrollment committee did an outstanding job, headed by David G. Armstrong '61. The meeting definitely achieved its purpose.
