The Class Officers Weekend
JUNE 1965

FROM the classes of 1898 through 1965, some 250 class officers gathered in Hanover on the sparkling spring weekend of May 7-8 to touch "home base," as they traditionally do each May, and to hold the annual working sessions of the six associations into which the officers are organized.

Class presidents, secretaries, treasurers, Alumni Fund agents, newsletter editors, and bequest and estate planning chairmen were back as guests of the College, and to their number were added the reunion chairmen of classes holding official reunions in 1965 and 1966. The total attendance of officers and their wives was one of the largest in the history of this annual spring homecoming.

The weekend program began, with a coffee reception Friday afternoon in the Top of the Hop, followed by a Studio Theater session at which talks were given by four administrative officers of the College: Edward T. Chamberlain Jr. '36, Director of Admissions; Albert I. Dickerson '30, Dean of Freshmen; William C. Quimby '52, Assistant Director of Financial Aid; and Associate Dean Charles F. Dey '52, who reported on Project ABC, of which he is the director.

Following a cocktail reception in the Top of the Hop, the annual Class Officers Banquet was held in Alumni Hall of Hopkins Center, with some class groups served in the Drake Room and in the Hanover Inn Tavern. The afterdinner program took place in 105 Dartmouth Hall and was presided over by Edward B. Pease '25, president of the Class Secretaries Association.

Herbert A. Wolff 'lO was honored with an Alumni Award, presented by former Alumni Council President Roger C. Wilde '21. (See page 51 for story and citation.) A progress report on the 1965 Alumni Fund was given by Fund Chairman Rupert C. Thompson Jr. '28, and as the highlight of the evening three undergraduates took part in a panel discussion, moderated by Dean Richard P. Unsworth of the Tucker Foundation. On the theme of "Issues, Ideology and Commitment," Charles D. Slade '67 described his work with the young inmates of the Windsor (Vt.) State Prison, Richard G. Tabors '65 told of working in Africa under the auspices of Crossroads Africa, and Bruce L. Lawder '66 spoke of his participation in the civil rights movement.

In his remarks as presiding officer, Mr. Pease expressed the regret of all that Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, was confined to Dick's House because of serious illness and was forced to miss the class officers weekend for the first time since he became secretary of the Class Secretaries Association in 1930.

At the association meetings the next morning, special resolutions were adopted by both the secretaries and the treasurers and were sent to Mr. Hayward as follows:

RESOLVED: For the first time since 1930, the Dartmouth Class Secretaries Association is meeting without the guidance and inspiration of its secretary, Sidney C. Hay ward '26. Very few among us have ever known what a meeting of this group would be like without our secretary, and now that our deliberations are concluded for this year we say in concert we want him back next year. Therefore, we hereby resolve that this resolution be spread not only upon the minutes of our meeting but upon Sid, his family, and the doctors at Mary Hitchcock Hospital who are making necessary repairs. Furthermore, we send our secretary affectionate greetings and all conceivable best wishes for a renewal of good health and return to our service in behalf of Dartmouth.

RESOLVED: That the Dartmouth Class Treasurers Association conveys its warm and affectionate greetings to Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, whose confinement in Dick's House has kept him from meeting with the class officers this weekend. Our pleasure in being back in Hanover is great, but it would be greater still if Sid Hayward were with us in our social and working gatherings. We miss him and hope that he will soon actively return to the place that is his alone, and that all Dartmouth men accord him, at the heart of the entire Dartmouth alumni program.

The concluding formal event of the weekend was the stag luncheon on Saturday, presided over by Donald G. Rainie '40, president of the Class Treasurers Association.

Prof. Leonard M. Rieser '44, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, spoke about the present quality of the students and the faculty, and about the interaction between the two. Calling today's students very good indeed, he cited a need for more very bright undergraduates who would give "a real cutting edge" to the College. The Dartmouth faculty was similarly praised by Dean Rieser, but some of its weaknesses were also cited in an explanation of the current effort to raise all departments and programs to the real distinction now enjoyed by many.

The other principal speaker at the luncheon was James W. Stevens '50, Director of Planning and Project Administration, who discussed Dartmouth's new graduate programs, particularly those at the doctoral level.

Annual awards to class officers of the year were announced at the luncheon by J. Michael McGean '49, Associate Secretary of the College. Honored with citations and copies of the new Dartmouth history, The College on the Hill, were Robert H. Zeiser '49 as Class President of the Year, Roger M. Bury '27 as Class Secretary of the Year, Harold L. Niles '07 as. Class Treasurer of the Year, Charles E. Brundage '16 as Class Bequest Chairman of the Year, and Richard W. Lippman '42 as Class Newsletter Editor of the Year. Citations are printed with their respective class columns in this issue.

Alumni Fund Chairman Rupert C. Thompson Jr. '28 made three other presentations to class agents who were outstanding in the 1964 campaign. William M. Alley '21 received the Fred A. Howland Trophy, Laurence G. Leavitt '25 the James B. Reynolds Trophy, and H. Sherwood Guernsey '31 the Joshua A. Davis Trophy. Their citations appear with their class columns.
