Most of our news this month is on the business front but I guess I'll begin with some important information that your other trusty scribe John Barto has been too moest to mention in his correspondence.
It seems 01' Rufe slipped right into the Alumni Council last spring without a lot of P.R. going for him to let us know. John, being, as you should know, president of the Alumni Club Officers' Association was also named representative of that august body on the even more impressive Dartmouth Alumni Council. He's been charged with the responsibility of investigating ways and means to improve or sustain three vital alumni activities: 1) Class giving in respect to 25-year gifts and special club scholarships. 2) Alumni Club activities, including the Alumni College. 3) And he will conduct a special study on alumni relations with the Alma Mater. This is quite an honor, especially for a member of a class a scant 14 years out, and Rufe really deserves the Wah-Hoo-Wah we give him this month.
In New York City (and I promise there are only two items from Gotham this month) Gerry Lukeman has been named vice president and director of client services for Audience Studies, Inc., an advertising-research company. Since I am now a client of ASI (or rather, one of my clients is a client) I'll expect to see Gerry more frequently. Gerry lives with his wife and daughter in Great Neck, N.Y.
The other New York news concerns one of our mates in the medical profession: Dr.George Howard has just announced the opening of his own office at the Institute of Ophthalmology which is up at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
Ops! Sorry! One more New York note of interest. Bob Peters has just recently been named public relations director by the Salvation Army for the borough of the Bronx. He will also direct The Salvation Army Service Extension Bureau for Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties in New York. Pete is married to the former Grace Elizabeth Gourlay and they have recently moved with their two sons to Scrub Oak in Westchester County.
The ending to the next saga, I am ashamed to say, I cannot give you. I have a clipping which informs me that Dave Neiditz did indeed throw his hat into the political arena right here in Connecticut. I talked to Dave last summer and he said he might run for office this fall but this is my first confirmation of it. According to my word Dave ran for the Democrats' nomination for Connecticut House of Representatives from the 12 th district in West Hartford. By the time you read this the finals will be in and some of you will know whether or not Dave is now ready to make laws for me. He's had a distinguished career in public service already — in fact his accomplishments are so numerous I pale at listing them for fear I will contract writer's cramp. But I hope he was successful, and will make a point of finding out if he was so I can let you know next month.
One note from out West before we go up North Country for the remainder. Out in Chicago The Northern Trust Company got a flash of brilliance and named ChuckCorey second vice president in the trust department. Chuck has been with the bank since 1958 when he got his law degree from the University of Michigan and he still lives in my old neighborhood in Northwest Evanston.
In Boston, where most of the rest of the news is centered, Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates has named Bob Weinig assistant to the President. Previous to that Bob was with Duff & Phelps, Inc., a management consultant firm based in Chicago. Bob will, or does, live in Wellesley with his wife and two children.
Also in Boston, the New England Merchants National Bank has a new vice president who looks a lot like Steve Parkhurst. In fact he is Steve Parkhurst. Steve is vice president in the computer services department when he isn't trying to help this old class raise money from recalcitrant givers.
And by the time you read this SteveMeterparel will be married to the former Miss Jane Aldelman, unless my information is faulty or something. They're scheduled for a November wedding anyway.
And now add another member to the growing list of Old Boys who have returned to the scenes of their youthful triumphs. Bob Kelly is back in Hanover as vice president of the Dartmouth National Bank. He moves there from Montvale, N.J., where he was assistant vice president of the local bank. It's good to know we have someone in a place of power in Hanover though I don't think that means Allen of Oklahoma could get a check cashed there even yet.
Fortunately for you (and for me) I have not only run out of news, I have run out of paper so I will spare you any more badinage till next month - next month? Next year!!
