The Board of Trustees has approved in principle recommendations of a special committee on student dining that call for building two additional dining halls one on the Tuck Mall and another near Richardson Hall. The long-term plans also call for renovation of Thayer Hall into smaller areas to make it more attractive to diners.
The eventual aim is to provide dining facilities for all single undergraduate students on a compulsory contract basis.
The report the Trustees "accepted in principle" was prepared by the nine-man Advisory Committee on Student Feeding and Housing Facilities headed by John P. Amsden '20, Professor of Chemistry Emeritus.
The Trustees have authorized preparing of preliminary plans for the Tuck Mall dining hall which is to be for freshmen. They also authorized preparing plans for the renovations at Thayer Hall which would continue to serve the sophomore class, and juniors and seniors up to the capacity of the facility.
The report urged that, as soon as it is feasible, the third dining facility near Richardson Hall be built to serve the senior class and any graduate students and faculty members who wish to use it.
Business Manager Richard W. Olmsted '32, said that at this stage it would be difficult to estimate when the new facilities might be completed, but said that no class now in college was likely to be affected by the compulsory aspects of the report. The Trustees have reserved decisions on whether the junior class might be required to contract when the Thayer Hall renovations are completed.
