Geographic Cover Story

Prominent attention was directed to Dartmouth's Ledyard Canoe Club last month when the National GeographicMagazine devoted its cover story to the kayak expedition along the Japanese coast by Dartmouth and Cambridge men in the summer of 1966.

The lead article in the September issue was "Kayak Odyssey: From the Inland Sea to Tokyo" written by Dan Dimanescu '64 of Hartford, Conn., leader of the trip. The stunning color photographs illustrating it were taken by Chris Knight '65 of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. These two men were both members of the Ledyard Canoe Club's celebrated journey down the Danube two summers before. That trip also was the subject of a Geographic cover story, written by Bill Backer '64 for the July 1965 issue.
