A bronze plaque marking the birthplace of the late President Ernest Martin Hopkins '01 in Dunbarton, N. H., was unveiled November 11 in a commemorative program sponsored by the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Merrimack County and the Dunbarton Historical Society.
The plaque, Imbedded in a large New Hampshire boulder, was unveiled by Mrs. Barbara Everett Hayward, widow of the late Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College and for many years one of President Hopkins' closest associates.
The birthplace, once the parsonage occupied by President Hopkins' preacher father, is now the private residence of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Merrill, who were present at the exercises.
Walter R. Henshaw '21 of Pittsfield, vice president of the Merrimack County alumni club, presided at the program, and J. Gardner Mills, president of the Dunbarton Historical Society, gave the opening remarks following the invocation by the Rev. Richard F. Beyer '22 of Bow. Other speakers were Dudley W. Orr '29 of Concord, representing the Dartmouth Trustees; Prof. Russell R. Larmon '19 of Hanover, former executive assistant to President Hopkins, who read a tribute from President Dickey; Richard F. Upton '35 of Concord, chairman of the New Hampshire State Historical Commission; and Paul G. Richter '20 of Concord, former president of the Merrimack County alumni club, who entered Dartmouth as a freshman when Mr. Hopkins began his presidency in 1916.
