James H. Wakelin Jr. '32, former Assistant Secretary of the Navy for research and development, has been named Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Thayer School of Engineering. The appointment places a national leader in research, development, and engineering at the head of a board which has the responsibility for advising the President and Trustees on the programs and management of Thayer.
Dr. Wakelin, who was President of the Scientific Engineering Institute from 1964 to 1966, is chief scientist and chairman of the Advisory Board of Ryan Aeronautical Company in San Diego.
He was the first man named to the newly created post of Assistant Secretary of the Navy for research and development and held the post for five years. He is currently the Chairman of the Board, Oceanic Foundation, a research institute in Hawaii, and also serves as board chairman of the Research Analysis Corporation, McLean, Va.
