Comp Lit Major.
APRIL 1967

Beginning in the fall of 1967 the College will offer undergraduates the opportunity to major in Comparative Literature. Although Comparative Literature courses have long been available, and in recent years have been considerably expanded and diversified, this is the first time a student has been able to elect this field of studies as a major.

The program, recently approved by the Executive Committee of the Faculty, will be interdisciplinary in approach and will stress, according to Professor of Romance Languages Lawrence E. Harvey, "flexible, individualized programs with a minimum of specific course requirements."

The Comparative Literature major will offer two approaches for interested students, and both will require "a good reading knowledge of two languages, ancient or modern, in addition to English, and include only three required courses." The first option concentrates on study of two or more literatures and their relations to each other; the second on one or more literatures to another discipline. In both programs the participants will spend at least one term abroad either improving their skill in one language, doing advanced work in one language, or learning a second.
