For the twenty-ninth successive year the Dartmouth Secretaries Association held its annual conference in Hanover. On May 12 and 13 ninety-one secretaries of alumni classes and clubs were guests of the College for the week-end meetings. The attendance exceeded that of any previous meeting of the Association.
Friday afternoon at 2:30 the 1933 meetings were called to order in the 1902 room of Baker Library by the president, F. H. Horan '22 of Washington, D. C. Rev. M. W. Adams '81 of Townsend, Mass., gave an invocation which was followed by the roll call by the secretary of the Association, S. C. Hayward '26 of Hanover. Mr. Horan welcomed the new secretaries to the meetings and then called on Professor N. L. Goodrich, librarian of the building built in 1928 through the generosity of the late George F. Baker. A description of the building and a statement of the purposes and ideals of the staff in its administration were given by Mr. Goodrich.
Carl F. Woods '04 of Boston, a member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, talked on the question of whether or not present methods of nominating men to positions on the Council are satisfactory. Mr. Woods stated that some question has been raised among alumni in regard to present plan of districting of the country followed in conducting Council elections and he also pointed out the questionable efficiency of present methods of operating nomination campaigns for vacant Council positions. His talk was followed by animated discussion by the secretaries present, resulting in the appointment of a committee to meet with the special committee of the Council for further study of the problem. Mr. Horan later announced the personnel of the committee to be N. W. Emerson '00 of Boston, J. C. Davis '19 of Framingham, and C. B. Rice '83 of Hartford.
In speaking for the Athletic Council its president, L. K. Neidlinger '23 of Boston, described the present condition of athletics at Dartmouth and plans for the future. Both as to finances and general administration the program of the Council was taken up by Mr. Neidlinger in some detail. On the basis of "no reporters present," he described present and future major policies of significance.
With a further report by the chairman of the Alumni Fund committee to follow at the dinner session Friday evening, A. I. Dickerson '30 of Hanover, secretary of the committee, described to the secretaries the "no quota" plan being followed in this year's campaign. He gave a comparison of the results at this stage of the drive in relation to last year's figures at the same time. These statistics show that the number of contributors, total of gifts, and average contributions are only slightly behind the figures of one year ago.
Reception and Dinner
The meethig was adjourned at 4:30 to the President's house where President and Mrs. Hopkins were hosts to the secretaries at the reception given annually in their honor.
Following the procedure last year, the Association held its annual banquet in Stell Hall, the new dining hall adjoining Tuck School. Mr. Horan served as toastmaster and called first in the after dinner program on the secretary who announced the awards for this year given to the "best class and club secretaries." The committee in charge of awarding these honors was composed of the secretary; Charlotte E. Ford, alumni recorder; and John M. Comstock '77 of Chelsea, Vermont, alumni editor of the MAGAZINE. Karl R. Maerker '10 of Pittsburgh, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Western Pennsylvania, was announced as the "best club secretary" for 1933. Natt W. Emerson of Boston, secretary of the class of 1900, was awarded first place for the "best class secretary." The prizes were announced to be six Dartmouth plates.
Other speakers at the dinner were J. S. Monagan '33 of Waterbury, Connecticut, secretary-chairman of the senior class; J. C. Sterling 'll of New York City, chairman of the Alumni Fund committee; Dean E. Gordon Bill, director of admissions; and President Hopkins 'Ol. In describing the new plan of admission to Dartmouth College, Dean Bill stated that it would be harder for a mediocre applicant to gain admission beginning with the class of 1938 than it has been under the previous plan; and it would be easier for an exceptional applicant to be admitted. President Hopkins spoke as his custom is in addressing the Association which lie helped Dr. Tucker to found in 1905, in an informal and confidential fashion. His remarks concerning College policies and ideals were as ever the high spot of the week-end program.
Saturday Meetings
Under the direction of J. G. Hodge Jr. '29 of East Orange, New Jersey, secretaries of alumni' clubs held a special meeting Saturday morning in the treasure room of the Library. Various plans for arranging interesting club programs were discussed, together with methods of keeping address lists, maintaining contacts with members, and published bulletins and news letters.
The second regular meeting for the entire Association was called at 10:00 Mr. Horan called first on J. C. Davis '19 of Framingham, for a talk on the budget plan used by his class. This discussion introduced the subject of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE which was then reported upon by S. C. Hayward '26, editor, and A. W. Frey '20, business manager. In concluding his statement of the unfavorable financial status of the MAGAZINE, Mr. Frey moved that the Association endorse a plan described by him whereby all classes would guarantee 100 per cent subscription of their members. The motion was seconded and then followed a lively discussion of the suggestion. Emphasis was laid by the many speakers on the desirability of increasing the subscription list to the point where at least a majority of Dartmouth men might keep in constant touch with the College through this medium; but doubt was also expressed by several that any successful plan of group subscriptions could be evolved this year. Testimony was introduced by several secretaries of their own success in similar plans for their classes; others stated that they were sure the 100 per cent subscription program could be effectively adopted. With the hour for adjournament at hand a vote was called for and a majority of the secretaries voted in approval of Mr. Frey's recommendation, with the understanding that plans for working out a satisfactory procedure would be made by class officers in conference with the MAGAZINE management and others concerned.
Committee Reports
Included in Mr. Frey's report as outlined above was the recommendation of a special committee on MAGAZINE subscriptions headed by him and including H. P. Hinman '10 of Barre, and C. J. Spaulding '24 of Worcester. Other committees to report were those in charge of class records which A. I. Dickerson '30 asked to be continued for another year and stated that displays in the room were evidence of accomplishment since the 1932 meetings; Mr. {layward announced that the movie service, Dartmouth College News, sponsored by the Association, was in slightly better position financially than a year ago although unpaid subscriptions by several clubs would result in a loss for the year; the resolutions committee, consisting of N. G. Burleigh '11 of Hanover, W. D. Parkinson '78 of Fitchburg, and J. B. Wallace '26 of Newark, reported as follows:
