THE demands made upon educational institutions are greater than ever before, and are increasing. Dartmouth's alumni and friends as well as corporations and foundations meet this challenge in a variety of ways that goes well beyond the Alumni Fund or an occasional bequest. The following list of gifts, grants, and bequests of $5,000 or more demonstrates the range of gift opportunities and sources which are involved in the support of the College.
Deferred Gifts
FRANKLIN F. DOTEN 1923: $10,000 subject to life income trust agreement, to add to the Franklin Ford Doten 1923 and Gladys Poor Doten Fund, income to Alumni Fund as long as any member of the Class of 1923 survives, thereafter the income to be used for the general purposes of the College.
LEE R. MACHALE 1915: $17,575 subject to life income trust agreement, to add to the Anne Jane MacHale (1915) Gift.
FRANCIS E. MERRILL 1926: $35,000 subject to life income trust agreement, to establish the Francis E. 1926 and Emily A. Merrill Fund #2.
Gifts from Alumni
JOHN M. MURRAY 1919: $5,018.75 to establish the John M. Murray 1919 Fund, annual income to Alumni Fund for credit of Dr. Murray during his lifetime, thereafter the Fund to be transferred to establish the John M. Murray 1919 Scholarship Fund.
GEORGE FREDERICK JEWETT JR. 1950: $7,500 in support of the Dartmouth Crew.
KENNETH F. MONTGOMERY 1925: $10,000 for a portrait of Mr. Morin, Librarian of the College, the balance to be expended for library purposes as Mr. Morin may designate.
HARVEY L. ROHDE 1939: $9,200 to add to the Harvey L. Rohde 1939 Scholarship Fund.
ALUMNI FUND: Three additional gifts of $5,000 and over, totaling $17,000, have been contributed since the last time this column appeared. This brings total Fund gifts, at this level, to $94,200 from 13 contributors.

MR. AND MRS. M. R. SCHWEITZER: A gift of 12 oil paintings by various artists and a drawing by an unknown 17th Century Dutch artist, appraised at $16,250.
MRS. GERTRUDE B. WRIGHT, widow of Professor William Kelley Wright and mother of Stanley P. Wright 1942: $25,000 to establish the Nathaniel Wright Family Library Endowment Fund for the study of local history and genealogy through the acquisition, preservation, publication, and administration of historical resources, including those related to the College and the Town of Hanover.
ANONYMOUS FRIEND OF THE COLLEGE: TWO oil paintings by F. Leger; a lithograph by Picasso; an oil painting by Arnold Blanch; an oil painting by E. W. Nay, appraised at $40,650.
Corporations
E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & Co.: $5,000 for the advancement of the teaching of chemistry and for strengthening the teaching of other subjects important in the education of scientists.
GULF OIL CORPORATION: $5,000 for a Tuck Student Fellowship.
THE PROCTER & GAMBLE COMPANY: $5,000 unrestricted grant to the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Medical School.
Foundations
THE DARTMOUTH CANADIAN FOUNDATION: $15,000, comprising $7,000 for scholarship awards to five Canadian students, $8,U00 for visiting faculty from Canada for the Spring Term in connection with the College's Canadian Year Program. The latter provides for Samuel D. Clark as Visiting Professor of Sociology and Sorel Etrog as Sculptor in Residence.
THE KETTERING FAMILY FOUNDATION: $50,000 unrestricted gift to the Medical School.
