The Dartmouth Forensic Union's team of Thomas J. Brewer '6B of Grandville, Mich., and John M. Isaacson '68 of Auburn, Me., won the National Collegiate Debate Tournament in Chicago in mid-April.
Their victory was the third national trophy for Dartmouth in the seven years that Associate Professor of Speech and debate coach Herbert L. James has guided Dartmouth teams to the tourney. Previous championships were taken in 1960 and 1963.
Brewer and Isaacson met Wayne State University in the tournament finals, winning by a 6 to 1 verdict. They had beaten Emory University in the octofinals, Northwestern University in the quarterfinals, and Georgetown University in the semifinals. The topic at the tournament was "Resolved: The United States should substantially reduce its foreign policy commitment."
Both of the victorious debaters are members of Casque and Gauntlet, residents of Little Hall, and Senior Fellowselect for next year; they are also partners on a project under Professor of Government Charles B. McLane '41.
