End to Mandatory Comprehensives.
JUNE 1967

The Dartmouth faculty has passed and sent to the Trustees a resolution that, if accepted by the Trustees, will make the spring term comprehensive examinations for seniors optional for each department of the College.

The resolution passed by the faculty at its May meeting reads: "For those completing resident requirements as of September 1967, the passing of a comprehensive examination is no longer a requirement for the bachelor of arts degree." If the Trustees approve the faculty action, each department will decide when and whether comprehensive examinations would be given. Seniors would be required to take final examinations in all their courses under the new proposal. Presently they do not take spring-term finals in courses in their major department.

In reporting the faculty vote, TheDartmouth included pro and con statements from the faculty. Class of 1925 Professor of Chemistry Walter H. Stockmayer thought it was a "good step" and predicted that his department would vote against comprehensives. Professor of English Harold L. Bond '42 was reported as saying that comprehensives were essential to his department's program and would probably be kept.
