MISS DOROTHY CLEAVELAND, Secretary to the President of the College for the past 27 years, now has a Dartmouth degree to make her a fellow alumnus of her father, Fred C. Cleaveland '95, and of her brother, Paul S. Cleaveland '36.
At the June meeting of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees the honorary degree of Master of Arts was voted for her.
It was no perfunctory action, because each of the Trustees has had frequent occasion to rely upon her and to know personally of the intelligent and gracious competence with which she has managed the top-level operations of the President's Office. Miss Cleaveland is now on extended leave because of illness, and her degree, with a very personal "citation" from President Dickey, reached her at her home in Lancaster, N. H.
Miss Cleaveland, a graduate of Simmons College, became secretary to President Hopkins in 1927 and worked with him for 18 years until his retirement. She has similarly assisted President Dickey for the past nine years, continuing to be, in his words, "uniquely important" in the administrative work of the College.
