Frank K. Kappler '36 (1) and Dick Dorrance '36 were cited as Class Newsletter Editors of the Year when class officers met on May 13 in Hanover. The following tribute accompanied the award:
Like other great partnerships it is impossible to honor one without the other. Take the writting ability of an associate editor of Life Magazine and combine it with the promotional talents of a New York advertising executive and the combination is at once winning, indeed, devastating.
Since 1964 the team of Kappler and Dorrance has been a 1936 household byword for quality as well as quantity. Their close association has produced a frequent and workmanlike newsletter of the highest quality. Their imaginative use of photography has been emulated by other classes and has, thereby, strengthened the entire newsletter program. It was their combined efforts in 1966 that helped to spark 1936 to a record breaking 30th Reunion.
The association of these two newsletter giants started as undergraduates when they wrote a series known as "The Green Quill" under the pseudonym of Eleazar. It was nearly thirty years later that the partnership was renewed. Kappler traveled the path from newspaper reporter to combat soldier, to newspaper editor, and finally to Life Magazine in 1961. Dorrance's forte lay in the area of promotion and advertising where he has been a general partner of Dorrance and Co. since 1952.
We take pleasure in saluting these leaders who have established a Dartmouth first as we name two classmates Newsletter Editors of the Year.
