M. J. Remsen '14 Named Top Bequest Chairman
JUNE 1967

Martin J. Remsen '14 was cited as Bequest Chairman of the Year at the annual meeting of Dartmouth class officers in Hanover on May 13. The following tribute to his services to Dartmouth was read at the gathering:

Martin Johnson Remsen of the Class of 1914, your distinguished career as a lawyer and New Hampshire dairy farmer proved to be only a "warm-up" for your vigorous retirement these past 20 years. From 1939 until you moved to White River Junction, Vermont in 1960, Hanover, New Hampshire was your hometown and the list of your services during those years for the community, the hospital and many civic organizations is much too long to repeat here.

Since your graduation you have been a loyal and devoted alumnus of the College and there is scarcely any job you have not done for your Class of 1914. Class President for six years, Head Class Agent for fifteen years, Chairman of the Class Memorial Fund Committee for five years and Reunion Chairman are only some of the more important of your past services. Currently you are Class Newsletter Editor, a job you have performed faithfully for many years.

You are also one of our "charter" Class Bequest Chairmen, having assumed this responsibility with the start of the Bequest and Estate Planning Program in 1951. In the past seventeen years this program has produced $25,500,000 for Dartmouth and your conscientious zeal and dedication in promoting its importance to your classmates has never flagged. Practicing what you preach, you and your charming wife, Kathleen, have established one of the major life income trusts on the College books.

We are aware that you have already received Dartmouth's coveted Alumni Award. Nevertheless, in recognition of the completion of your meritorious two-year term as president of our Association and in honor of your seventeen years as Bequest Chairman of your Class and a lifetime of devoted effort on Dartmouth's behalf, the Association of Bequest Chairmen is proud to proclaim you as Bequest Chairman of the Year.
