Sixty five members of the club and their wives gathered at the College Club in Seattle on Saturday evening, April 8, for the club's annual dinner and dance.
Highlight of the meeting was the presence of President John Sloan Dickey in the Northwest to make formal announcement of the first Dartmouth Alumni College to be planned away from Hanover. President Dickey pointed out that since it is still impractical for many alumni out here on the far border to attend the Alumni College in Hanover, it makes good sense for the college to come to them. Therefore, an Alumni College, scaled down for traveling and sponsored by the Dartmouth Club of Western Washington, will convene September 8 through 10 at the Alderbrook Inn, south of Seattle on Puget Sound. It will feature two imported Dartmouth professors, Harold L. Bond '42 of the English Department and Larry K. Smith from History. Alumni interested in obtaining further information (and who live in the Northwestern states or British Columbia) should contact ThomasB. Russell '61, at Court House Building, North Bend, Wash.
Other highlights of the Dartmouth Club of Western Washington's annual meeting included the presentation of the Class of '49's "Golden Pickaxe Award" to MarvinB. Durning '49, for his outstanding contributions to the field of natural resource conservation and for his government service. Professor Richard R. Eberhart '26, well known to the Dartmouth community, took time from his work as a visiting professor at the University of Washington to attend the meeting, and, finally, with a speed that was more efficient than democratic the club ratified its slate of officers for the coming year: President, Thomas B. Russell '61; vice president, Herman S. Sigueland '54; treasurer, James W. Jones III '50; secretary, Sturges D. Dorrance '63.
