Coach Whitey Burnham's lacrosse Indians finished 3-8 this spring, but the statistics leave out most of the facts. The 1967 club was no pushover, making its hard-hitting, heads-up style of play respected throughout the league. Though losing eight of its contests the Green showed more scoring ability than previously, controlling the ball well. A measure of the quality of this team can be seen, not in the outcome, but in its never-say-die play against lacrosse powerhouse Brown. It could be said that Brown won the game, but lost the match. The fired-up Indian offense bounced back from a two- goal deficit in the first period to lead 5-3 at the half. Brown power asserted itself in the third quarter, outscoring the Green 3-1 and locking the score at 6-all. Playing over their heads, the Indian defense kept the Bruins scoreless through most of the final period, allowing only one late goal, losing the game 7-6. Much of the season saw the same Green spirit keep Dartmouth in the action against superior teams.
Junior attackman Rob McCormick, Baltimore, Md., led the Indian scoring again this spring, with 26 points on 6 goals and 20 assists. Rob was selected to All-American honorable mention for the second time, and was named to the All- Ivy first team. McCormick has been selected to captain the 1968 lacrosse squad. Senior Bob Dobbin, Owings Mills, Md., proved to be the most pleasant surprise of the season. An attackman, he collected 21 points, strictly on goals. Bob was awarded the Tom Dent Memorial Lacrosse Award, made to a senior player who, by vote of the entire team, has demonstrated the ideals of Tom Dent through his aggressive play, proven ability as a team player, and his enjoyment of the game, and by his sportsmanlike conduct has been a credit to the memory of Tom Dent and to Dartmouth.
The Indians placed three men on the All-Ivy honorable mention team: Dobbin; senior defenseman Bob MacLeod, Malibu, Calif.; and Captain Grant Monahon, midfielder from Basking Ridge, N.J.
