The Spaulding-Potter Charitable Trusts of New Hampshire have made a $500,000 grant to the College to strengthen its programs of regional cooperation and development.
The Spaulding-Potter Charitable Trusts were set up in the mid-1950's under the wills of the late Huntley N. Spaulding, A.M. '27, former Governor of New Hampshire; his wife, the late Mrs. Harriet M. Spaulding; and his sister, the late Mrs. Marion S. Potter, to provide venture money for education, aid to dependent children, and care for the sick and elderly. It is the largest foundation of its kind in New Hampshire, and 60 per cent of its funds are distributed in the state.
The College in recent years has initiated several programs of sharing techniques and knowledge developed by the faculty with surrounding communities. To give overall direction to these regional efforts and to implement the purposes of the Spaulding-Potter grant, Dartmouth has named Prof. Frank Smallwood '51 Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Chairman of the Division visionof Social Sciences, as coordinator of regional activities.
In 1958 the Spaulding-Potter Charitable Trusts gave Dartmouth $500,000 to build the Spaulding Auditorium in Hopkins Center. Other grants have helped the Medical School to develop its programs of regional medicine.
