The first regular meeting of the Dartmouth Campus Conference was held November 16-17 at the Hartness House in Springfield, Vt. The Conference was established, as President Dickey explained at Convocation, to provide a forum for undergraduates, faculty, administrators, and Trustees to examine College matters of common concern. In addition to the student and faculty members of the Conference, participants at the first meeting included President Dickey, Provost Leonard M. Rieser '44, Vice President and Treasurer John F. Meek '33, Dean of the College Thaddeus Seymour, and three Trustees: F. William Andres '29 (chairman of the Conference), Charles J. Zimmerman '23, and Thomas W. Braden '40.
The main subject of discussion at the November meeting was the governance of the College and especially the organization of the student body. Consideration was primarily directed toward the matter of representation, faculty-student relationships, and ways to bring the students' academic and residential life into a closer relationship. Other subjects on the discussion agenda were the College's budget and financial strategy, the joint faculty-staff-student Committee on Standing and Conduct, and coeducation at Dartmouth. In general, the participants felt that a successful start had been made toward the objective of getting to know each other better, a primary purpose of the initial meetings of the Conference.
A second meeting of the group, tentatively planned for January 25-26, will be preceded by an open meeting to be held at the Top of the Hop Saturday afternoon, January 25. This gathering is designed to give the Dartmouth community an opportunity to express their views to the Conference members on matters of mutual concern.
