Class Giving Adds $11 Million

SWELLED by early gifts to the Third Century Fund, a record Alumni Fund total, and substantial bequest realizations, a grand total of almost $11,000,000 was added to Class totals during 1967-68. This increased the aggregate of recorded gifts by alumni classes to $73,479,415 as of June 30, 1968. Detailed lists of recorded gifts for all Dartmouth classes are shown in the accompanying table.

The Class of 1915 maintained its commanding lead in the overall totals, but 1914 moved up impressively on the strength of the major Third Century Fund gift of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Remsen. Their contribution, the largest single gift ever received by Dartmouth from a living alumnus, helped push the class total over the $3-million mark.

Four classes — 1920, 1923, 1925, and 1926 - passed the $2-million figure and three - 1933, 1934 and 1953 - brought to 25 those with milliondollar totals.

Another key milestone - one-half million dollars in total Alumni Fund giving - was passed by three classes - 1918, 1931, and 1935. The Class of 1930 led the 1968 Alumni Fund with gifts of $68,131 and three other classes — 1925, 1926, and 1942 - also surpassed $60,000.

The Class of 1943 topped its $600,000 25th Year goal by some $50,000. Of the $650,000 total announced at their reunion banquet in June, almost $300,000 was raised during the intensive 2½-year campaign leading up to reunion.

As might be expected, the single largest avenue of alumni giving during the year was the Third Century Fund and it is expected that this campaign will continue to hold the spotlight for the next several years. However, the regular fund-raising programs of the College continue. The 1968 Alumni Fund met its challenge by maintaining its 1967 level. The final total was actually up $47,000 to $2,148,548. The Bequest and Estate Planning Program also achieved significant results with 52,881,649 in bequest realizations, 5352,893 from trusts in the hands of others, $321,872 in estate planning Sifts, and $868,549 in gifts subject to Me income. A portion of the latter tWo categories also received Third Century Fund credit.
