Ed Gust Williams '64 of Rosendale, N. Y., won a place on the United States Winter Olympic Team for the X Winter Olympiad at Grenoble, France, in February by placing 3rd and 4th in tryout races in the Biathlon event held at Olympia Sports Village in Upson, Wis.

Biathlon combines the cross-country skiing and shooting abilities of the contestant in one event and calls for the utmost in conditioning and skill. Williams was one of six chosen to the Olympic Team from 19 candidates successful in regional trials. All the final trial races last month were held in subzero temperatures in the northern Wisconsin area not far from the shores of Lake Superior.

While at Dartmouth, Williams participated in three NCAA championships in the cross-country event and placed 12th at Squaw Valley in 1962, 6th at Alta in 1963, and 3rd at Hanover in 1964. In his junior year he won national prominence as a cross-country runner by winning the 30-kilometer Senior National Class A Championship' at Andover, Maine, over a classy field. In his senior year he was top collegiate cross-country racer in the East and won his event in all the winter carnivals.

In 1965-66 he was the top American competitor in the World Biathlon Championships held at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Last September he received a leave of absence from Tuck School to train for the Olympic trial races.
