George Blaney, 29, basketball coach and director of athletics at Stonehill College for the past two years, has succeeded Dave Gavitt as Dartmouth's basketball coach.
Blaney, a former basketball standout at Holy Cross, was appointed in August following announcement of Gavitt's decision to become basketball coach at Providence College. At Holy Cross he was co-captain of the 1960-61 basketball team which had a 21-5 record and advanced to the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament. He had a 13.1-point scoring average during three years and ranks tenth among Holy Cross' all-time scoring leaders.
He played professional basketball for the New York Knickerbockers and the Philadephia '76ers of the NBA. He went to Stonehill in 1967 and his 1968-69 team had a 15-7 record, the best in Stonehill basketball history.
