The Avalon Foundation of New York City has awarded the College a $600,000 grant for creation of an endowed professorship in the humanities. The occupant of the new faculty chair, to be known as "The Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities," will be designated later This is the fourth endowed professorship established of ten being sought in the Third Century Fund campaign.
Created in 1940 by Mrs. Ailsa Mellon Bruce, the Avalon Foundation participates in a broad range of philanthropic activities. In accepting the gift, President Dickey noted, "We particularly appreciate this decisive encouragement of Dartmouth's determination to keep the humanities strong and central in modern liberal learning."
During the past two years the humanities faculty at Dartmouth has developed a number of new programs, including one in comparative literature, and has devoted special attention to the relationship of humanistic studies and the arts.
