The 106th Annual Dinner of the Boston Alumni, held February 13 at the Sheraton-Boston Hotel, was a truly memorable event. Over 700 alumni and wives were on hand to bid farewell to President Dickey and to welcome President-elect Kemeny. We were honored to be hosts for the first major public appearance of the two presidents. Dr. Dickey was given a standing ovation in recognition of his outstanding service to the College.
We were all inspired by Dr. Kemeny's speech, in which he set forth his belief that adult education should be expanded, calling for establishment by corporations and others of sabbatical programs designed to stimulate, refresh, and re-educate those who need the opportunity for a new intellectual challenge in an academic setting. Certainly all who heard his stirring speech are firmly convinced that the leadership of Dartmouth has been placed in very good hands.
Outgoing President Howard C. Smith Jr. '52, was master of ceremonies. The program included presentation of an Alumni Award to Doane Arnold '27; greetings from William H. Timbers '37, President of the Alumni Council; an encouraging progress report on the Third Century Fund by Samuel A. Groves '31; and a presentation of a mantel clock to President Dickey from the Boston alumni. It concluded with the Glee Club Bi-Centennial Program, which had narration and slides in addition to the music. Under Professor Paul Zeller's direction, the Club has put together a moving historical portrait of the College which will be long remembered by those who heard it.
During a short business meeting, the following officers were elected: Edward F. McLaughlin Jr. '42, president; Ira L. Berman '42, first v.p.; John M. Haffenreffer '44, 2nd v.p.; Charles H. Hood II '51, 3rd v.p.; George K. Briggs '55, treasurer; Stephen R. Parkhurst '52, secretary; John W. Williamson '42, assistant secretary. We look forward to continued service to the Boston Alumni and to the College under the gifted leadership of Dr. Kemeny.
