On behalf of the entire Class of 1968 I want to express my sincere appreciation for the copy of "The College on the Hill" you gave each of us as a graduation memento. I can think of no more fitting way for the fifty-year class to welcome the graduating class into the family of Dartmouth alumni.
Each of us had a unique experience and education during his four years in Hanover, and despite all the attention given to the "generation gap," I believe that your gift served to remind us that we do have some bonds with your class. We shared the Dartmouth experience and we both have helped to make the College what she is today. In addition, and even more important, your class, like ours, was faced with a war, and I imagine that, as students about to enter the "wide wide world," you were concerned about the problems of your society, as we are today.
We all realize how much Dartmouth has changed in fifty years, but I hope that one thing will always remain the same: for both classes the Dartmouth education was relevant to our life's goals, and hopefully prepared us to meet the challenges of the world or, if you like, to challenge the world more effectively.
The book is a beautiful and meaningful symbol of the College that gave us this experience and strength. Thank you very much.
President, Class of 1968
