ONE of the major gifts to the Third Century Fund, by Mrs. Lillian B. Strauss of Swampscott, Mass., will enable the College to establish a new professorship in memory of her husband, the late Jacob H. Strauss '22. The endowed chair will be named The Jacob H. Strauss 1922 Professorship of Music.
Announcement of the gift was made April 25 at an informal Hanover reunion of the Class of 1922. President Kemeny, an adopted member of the class, was present at the luncheon of sixty persons and spoke of Dartmouth's gratitude for this gift which will enrich the cultural life of the College for many years to come. Mr. Strauss had a lifelong interest in music and all the arts.
The endowed professorship is the second major gift Mrs. Strauss has made to Dartmouth. Six years ago, at a similar Class of 1922 gathering, the Jacob H. Strauss 1922 Memorial Gallery was dedicated in the Hopkins Center. At that time the first annual Jacob H. Strauss '22 Exhibition was held, made possible by a memorial fund established for the purpose. Since the dedication of the Strauss Gallery six years ago it has been the scene of many of the most important exhibitions staged by the Hopkins Center.
