The 45th reunion of the Class of 1925 was another pleasant, informative and stimulating gathering in Hanover, June 15 through 17. 184 was the total attendance and this included classmates, wives, widows, and one child.
The classes of 1924, 1926, and 1930 held reunions at the same time. Headquarters for 1925 were in the new modern Tuck Mall dormitory just across Tuck Drive from the President's house, and the weather was perfect.
The opening event was the Alumni Dinner for all classes in Leverone Field1 House. Following this President John G. Kemeny talked and answered questions in the Spaulding Auditorium of Hopkins Center. This was the first contact with the new president for most of us and the impression made by his clear statements and answers and his approach to the problems of the College was a most favorable one.
That same evening there was an informal reception in the President's garden and on both Monday and Tuesday nights the Glee Club presented a beautiful and moving "Portrait of Dartmouth" by Ralph N. Hill '39, a history of the College in song, picture, and story. It is a splendid production.
Tuesday featured a morning panel discussion with three Dartmouth deans and one professor which gave all alumni present a lot of information about the pressing questions of the day in Hanover and another chance to ask questions and express their own opinions. The class luncheon in the Bema brought lobsters and clams in great quantities to the peaceful tables set among the pines and for many was followed by the class nap in preparation for the evening gathering in Thayer Hall. After the excellent dinner the "Injunaires" entertained with their songs and to conclude the program President Kemeny came in for an informal word of greeting.
A memorial service was held Wednesday morning in Rollins Chapel, greatly changed inside since the days we first knew it. This was followed by the class meeting in Silsby Hall. The reunion program was ended with a pleasant luncheon under the tent outside Tuck Mall.
Ford Whelden opened the meeting by reporting that the following had been elected in the recent voting as members of the Class executive committee: Pete Haffenreffer, Larry Leavitt, Bob McKennan, Charlie Moore, Eddie Pease, Herb Talbot, Ford Whelden, Bob Borwell, Eddie Roessler, and Doug Archibald. This group met May 25 and elected these officers: President, CharlieMoore; first vice-president and chairman, Bob Borwell; second vice-president, BillJenkins; third vice-president, Pete Haffenreffer; treasurer, Lane Goss; secretary, DougArchibald.
Charlie Moore then took over the gavel and the Class expressed its thanks to FordWhelden for his ten years of energetic and devoted service as president; to Eddie Pease who served as secretary for twelve years and to Eddie Roessler who was treasurer for fifteen years. Resolutions were passed as presented by Bob McKennan and gratitude was also expressed to Charlie Moore for what everyone agreed was a first-class job of organizing and running a top-notch reunion.
The thoughts and feelings of all were well put by Frank Shea who had planned to be there but could not and who sent this telegram from Washington to Ford Whelden:
"I had looked forward eagerly to this reunion but litigation has blown up on me like a summer squall and I cannot leave it unattended even for three days. As the prospective years diminish and more years are added and the men who shared those days become ever more endeared, I do not remember those days as carefree and happy but rather as days of striving and no little anxiety as I tried to find myself and the ways wherein I would walk. But they were full of growth and of enough gaiety and easy camaraderie to make their remembrance a thing of joy. Please wish all my friends long lives and much happiness. Say a special word to Herb Talbot. I have been a devoted reader of his for years and I think any class which chose him to memorialize its style, spirit, and its insights is entitled to be called a Great Class."
