It is with regret that we record the death of two more classmates: Vergne L. Hoffman on April 10, and Gardner C. Ferguson on July 18. On the brighter side, we are happy to record that the Class made a surge forward in the Alumni Fund tallies. We hardly shine as an "all time" winner, but we did come within 3.4% of hitting our dollar goal with the problem still remaining a 69.9% of participation or some 10% below the winning class participation total of 1933. Still it was a handsome effort compared to recent years, and our plaudits to Class Agent Dusty Bohde and his willing workers for a splendid effort.

While on the subject of College support, we think it noteworthy to report that Bobby Jacobson and his family are setting up a Benjamin Jacobson Scholarship in honor of the elder Jacobson's 80th birthday. It starts with a handsome $10,000 gift entered into by Bobby, brother-in-law Bill Green, Bob's younger brother, Ben Jr. '49, Bob's son Arthur '6l (the '39 class baby) and Bill's son Bill Jr. '67. It seems particularly appropriate with Bob's Dad still very much alive and able to enjoy this handsome tribute. Our congratulations to this good Dartmouth family.

Here's a bit of -old business. We promised a clarification on an item of some months ago about a Lew Joel. Poppa Lew had been oft reported as the distinguished Superintendent of the Clinton and Killing- worth, Conn, schools, but we had filed a contrary report that a Lew Joel was entering into some educational contract in Cohasset. We speculated that it could be Lew's son, also a Dartmouth grad. '39er Lew confirms our speculation. He remains at the old stand in Connecticut, and further reports that the BIG family news is wife Lorraine's interrupted graduation with honors from Southern Connecticut State College in June. As a reward she spent July touring the Soviet Union, not to be confused, according to Lew, with being "shipped off to Siberia."

A note from Jane Vulte of June vintage suggests that the high flying Vultes have in their travels spent several evenings with Chuck Maher and wife Patty, in Guatemala. "They built a beautiful home there where they have lived for years. Chuck is active in a variety of things including the marble export business. Also Jane reports that Larry had run into General Jim Feeley at the Sano Hotel in Tokyo, but this is a vintage note of some 12 months aBo. General Jim is now listed as being quartered in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

We received a bounty of clippings of a full-page color ad for Bethlehem Steel, which appeared (we think) in Forbes Magazine. It depicts a ruggedly handsome Colby Howe showing a youngster how to work a spinning reel, as part of the company's Big Brother activities. It lists Colby as manager of the San Francisco sales district, supervising sixty people, but with enough time to be a factor in local Big Brother activities.

Talking about gridiron greats, we have a report as of May Bob Gibson has been elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the G. T. Schjeldahl Co., Northfield, Minn. Gibby was elected to the Schjeldahl board in June of '70. He will continue his duties as Chairman of the Executive Committee of Toro Manufacturing Corp., with which he has been associated for many years. His comment on a note received in late May was, "there goes my golf game for the summer." We doubt it!

Dick Monahon has become general manager of Sugarbush Inn, year-round resort and convention complex in the Sugar-bush Valley of Vermont. He is former vice president of Trundle Consultants, Inc., a management consulting firm, and of Oil Equipment Laboratories, Inc. He and Joan moved to the North Country in June from Basking Ridge, N. J. They have two Dartmouth sons, Richard Jr. '65 and Grant '67, and a daughter Cynthia.

Joe Hoover writes that his son Mike is starting his freshman year at Dartmouth this fall, and Joe is looking forward to making the Hanover scene. And this is as good a time as ever to remind all you guys that any day now we'll be convening for our happy fall reunion over the Penn game weekend. Based on when this issue reaches you, you may still have time to join the fun.

Our condolences to Bob Timbers who lost his Dad this past May, at age 83. And now, because this first fall issue is sort of a catch-up proposition, we'll move on to the fistful of address changes so that you may know of the comings and goings of "lost" friends.
