The grand total of undergraduate and graduate enrollment, creeping up on the 4000 mark, is projected this fall at 3905, compared with 3794 last year. This estimate by Registrar Douglas M. Bowen divides into 3340 undergraduates (3260 last fall) and 565 graduates (534 last fall).
The undergraduate figure includes 819 freshmen, among whom are 15 Indian Americans, for the second year in a row, and 75 to 80 black students, as Dartmouth enters its third year of a program which aims to reflect national proportions of blacks and whites in its student population.
The graduate student breakdown is forecast at 116 candidates for advanced degrees in arts and sciences, 265 at Tuck School, 113 at the Medical School, and 71 at the Thayer School.
The number of women exchange students at Dartmouth this fall is 150, double the number enrolled in 1970-71 under the Twelve-College Exchange Program. Four men exchange students are also on campus.
