Foreword to the Third Century
DECEMBER 1971 WILLIAM E. BUCHANAN '24

This report is basically a statistical record of the achievements by Dartmouth's Third Century Fund and a complete listing of those who worked and provided support. I hope that each reader will appreciate that no report of this type can ever record the full dimensions of the services, devotion and sacrifices which lie behind the statistics and listings.

As Chairman of the Third Century Fund Executive Committee it becomes my privilege to acknowledge the successful outcome of this great endeavor. I do so humbly and gratefully and with a full measure of appreciation to the many who worked in such a dedicated fashion on the campaign, and to the thousands of alumni, parents, friends, foundations and corporations who contributed so willingly and generously.

This foreword should have been written by our National Chairman, Rupe Thompson, '28 whose ceaseless determination and unflagging enthusiasm led us throughout the campaign until his tragic death which came a few short months before the campaign was successfully concluded. These achievements stand as the ultimate tribute and testimony to this great leader.

It is appropriate, I believe, to acknowledge certain others whose leadership played a major role in the Third Century Fund. Clearly the campaign represented a culmination of the 25 years of leadership which John Sloan Dickey '29 provided to all areas of Dartmouth as its 12th President. We should also acknowledge the major contribution of Dartmouth's 13 th President, John G. Kemeny, who served as Foundations Chairman during the campaign and whose leadership, during his first months in office, helped carry the Third Century Fund to a successful climax.

Each of my fellow Trustees devoted hours of service and substantial resources to this achievement, and a number of them (identified by photograph and title elsewhere in this report) also headed up various committees and programs for the campaign Special thanks and congratulations are clearly due Lawrence Marx, Jr. '36 and Emil "Bus" Mosbacher '43, who served as co-chairmen for the general alumni campaign.

This type of campaign obviously requires full time staffing and here Dartmouth was again most fortunate. The professional firm of Kersting-Brown with Don Kersting '43 as President and Wolcott Street as Campaign Director provided continued counsel and also furnished excellent field directors for our regional offices. Our in house professional Development staff in Hanover, ably directed by George Colton, '35, Vice-President and Addison L. Winship II, '42, Director of Development, supplemented and worked with our regional staff on all phases of the campaign.

But the real heart of the entire campaign was the direct, personalized solicitations carried on by some 3,300 volunteers who served on the various committees and in the regions. The deep appreciation of the entire College family is extended to these workers who so energetically served this Dartmouth cause.

The Third Century Fund is now history, and yet the impact provided by these gifts will carry a long way into Dartmouth's future. Thus, in a very real sense this report is not just a historic document, but represents a foreword to Dartmouth's new Third Century and both an opportunity and challenge, because of these resources, to assure our College of continued strength in service to society and higher education. This, I suggest, is our mission and our reward.
