The year 1970-71 has been an active, rewarding one for the "Dartmouth Club of the Year." It has been a year of service to the College, active participation by an increasing number of alumni, and expansion of Club programs that support the best interests of Dartmouth College.
The year registered another increase in Club membership which is open to all alumni. Dartmouth parents, and friends of Dartmouth. Dues-paying members exceeded 225. Membership lists were kept current and newly arrived alumni were individually invited to join.
Luncheon meetings were continued on a monthly basis at the Shoreham Hotel. The variety of programs matched the diverse interests of our members. Speakers included Al Merrill, ski coach and Director of Outdoor Affairs; Tony Lupien, baseball coach; Gene Lyons, Dryfoos Professor of Public Affairs; Ad Winship '42, Director of Development; Charles J. Zimmerman '23, chairman of the Board of Trustees; David Ragone, Dean of Thayer School; Richard Chase, Greater Hartford Corporation; and John Olguin, Director of Indian Programs.
Special events broadened the Club's horizons. Area freshmen, accompanied by their parents, were guests at the September "Send-Off." The Avery Court of the Wadsworth Atheneum was the scene of the cocktail hour. Professors Henry Terrie and James Cox extended the greetings of the College after the sumptuous buffet. December was highlighted by the "Dartmouth Christmas Cocktails" gathering at the Hotel Sonesta. Alumni and their guests enjoyed the 1970 Football Highlights film.
On Sunday, April 25, the Club sponsored the 12th anniversary of the Dartmouth Cup competition between the Dartmouth and Yale rugby teams. Harvard vs. Princeton and Wesleyan vs. Amherst completed the tripleheader. The profits of the day were once again earmarked for the Scholarship Fund. Arrangements were made to have the game filmed for later local and nationwide Educational TV showings.
The Club will be honored on May 13 by the presence of Director of Admissions Edward T. Chamberlain '36 at its annual meeting to be held at the Tower Suite of the Hartford Insurance Group, overlooking the city.
The Club has continued its active interest in community service. Meetings were held with local educators to determine the feasibility and advantages of proposed programs. The Club again participated in the youth hockey program of Columbia, the birthplace of the College and the scene of the Club's College Bicentennial Celebration. The Club presented its "most valuable player" trophy at the annual banquet.
In conjunction with five other graduate associations, the Club instituted its own continuing education seminar. "New Thoughts on Old Ideas" was held in March at Trinity College. Among the visiting professors was John Sommer '60, Assistant Professor of Geography. The Club is presently working with the College to sponsor an Alumni Seminar dealing with "Nature and the Environment" in early fall on Cape Cod.
Monthly newsletters were initiated to communicate effectively. Special meeting announcements, local newspaper releases, and a telephone committee rounded out this effort.
The Scholarship Fund enjoyed an excellent year. The profits of the rugby game represented a significant contribution. Special thanks go to the members of the President's Committee who generously contributed to this undertaking.
Enrollment activities were once again an important factor in Club activities. A large number of alumni screened, interviewed, and encouraged an outstanding group of applicants. As part of this activity, candidates and alumni met with Jay Evans '49. Assistant Director of Admissions, in the fall at Kingswood.
As demonstrated in this year's annual report, the Club's success is directly attributable to the hardworking efforts of its members, its officers, its executive committee, and its undergraduate representative. Jim Weaver '73.
