Few people expected that Dartmouth would come close to matching the performance of the 1970 football team but given a few more seconds during the Columbia game and it might have been a carbon copy.

"I guess we surprised a few people," said Jake Crouthamel after the 33-7 romp at Princeton closed an 8-1 season and brought the Indians a share of the Ivy League title with Cornell.

"It's nice to know, if you have to share the championship, that you beat the co-champion," said Dartmouth's first-year coach. "This team didn't accomplish the impossible, but it did achieve the improbable."

There were only 12 seniors on this team. They have the honor of having played in 25 winning games during their three years at Dartmouth.

It was the first time that Dartmouth has gained a third straight Ivy League title and its the eighth for the Indians since league play was formalized in 1956. They've won four and shared four others.

Statistically, sophomore Rick Klupchak chak from Olympia Fields, Ill., was the rushing leader with 638 yards, a six-yard average.

The top passer was senior Bill Pollock who hit 33 of 70 for 520 yards and five touchdowns. Junior Steve Stetson was close behind with 48-84 for 490 yards and four touchdowns. Stet- son had the top completion percentage in the Ivy League (.583).

Ted Perry kicked his way to the scoring lead with 23 conversions and six field goals for 41 points. The top receiver was junior split end Tyrone Byrd who caught 22 passes for 310 yards and three TDs.
