Cross Country

After a very poor season last fall, the varsity cross-country squad is expected to show some improvement, but it's a long, uphill climb, as they say. Coach Ellie Noyes has six returning lettermen in Captain Mike Nolen, Dick Nau, Mike Kistler and Jim Lennox — all seniors — and Art Pritchard and Ed Berkowitz, juniors. A quartet of sophomores expected to bolster the squad includes Roger Coates, captain of last year's freshman team, Steve Merill, Fred Schwab and Dan Tracy. Captain Mike Nolen and Art Pritchard are the top-rated harriers on the squad, but there is no really standout runner this fall.

Looking ahead, however, we hear that the crop of freshman cross-country and distance runners this fall is possibly the strongest contingent in a decade.
