Swimmers Defeat Yale
MARCH 1972

Dartmouth athletic history was made in Karl Michael Pool on February 19 when the Big Green swimming team defeated Yale for the first time in 50 years of trying. Co-captains Chris Carstensen '72 and Bill Thorwarth '72 were the big guns in the 63-50 win. Freestyler Carstensen set meet records in the 50-yard and 100-yard events and then anchored the 400-yard relay team, which won the final and clinching event by four feet in a time of 3:11.39. Thorwarth was a double winner in the one-meter and three-meter dives. Other first-place finishers for Dartmouth were Jim Bayles '74, 1000 freestyle; Jim Gottschalk '72, 200 individual medley; and Bill Lehman '73, 200 breaststroke.

On the same weekend, in Davis Rink, the Big Green hockey team continued its remarkable streak by defeating Penn, 4-2, on the heels of two other underdog wins over Cornell and Harvard.
