Construction is progressing on a $400,000 women's physical education facility at Dartmouth, to be ready for use in September when the first women undergraduates arrive.

The 6900-square-foot, two-story complex attached to the southeast corner of Alumni Gymnasium will provide modern locker and shower facilities for the approximately 350 women students who will attend the College this fall.

It will be constructed in two phases. The 4200-square-foot second floor will be completed under phase one and will contain 650 individual lockers, showers, sauna bath, towel room, and toilet facilities including vanities and hair dryers. Phase two will consist of a 2700-square-foot ground floor that will be finished at a later date. This floor will include separate locker and shower facilities for women faculty and staff, in addition to team dressing rooms as Dartmouth enters women's teams in intercollegiate competition.

When completed, the women's facility will have direct access to the Karl Michael Pool, the basketball court and other sports areas in Alumni Gymnasium while also providing easy access to the outdoor tennis courts, the track and field facilities in Memorial Stadium, and skating facilities at the Davis Rink.

Mr. Peters estimated that during the 1972-73 academic year, 250 of the 350 women undergraduate students will participate in the required physical education program along with some 800 freshmen men.

The women's physical education facility was designed by the Hanover architectural firm of Fleck and Lewis. The Trumbull-Nelson Construction Co., also of Hanover, is the contractor.
