You can't "have a good day" when Dartmouth loses, but September 29 at UNH came closer than most. The weather was perfect; the fall foliage from Damariscotta to Durham couldn't have been lovelier; and it was a pleasure to tailgate and picnic with my sister and brother-in-law, Roberta and Gordon Merriam '21, and find that our seats at the game were next to the Dawkins. The only other '38er we spotted was Paul Urion. It's too bad more of you weren't there.

Without trying to undercut '38 attendance in years to come at other games - in Hanover and vs. Harvard and Yale - I'd like to make a pitch for future UNH engagements. Durham must be no more than 75 miles from Boston, and for any alumni living there or in southern or central New Hampshire or southwestern Maine it's a heck of a pleasant ride in late September. I hope that Director of Athletics Seaver Peters has at least a home-and-home series with UNH laid on.

Furthermore, the listing of the Dartmouth squad in the game program was captioned The Indians. This was gratifying to your secretary. I believe mention of it will be gratifying to most of you.

Unavoidably, these notes are being written before but won't be read until well after the Reeves' party at their new home in Quechee following the Penn game. With all the man- (and Woman-... or should we say "person-"?) power indicated by the prospective guest list in the recent Pace Setter, the host and hostess should have had plenty of handy help to complete anything in their handsome new house that wasn't quite ready.

Not new news, but very good news, is a press release of a lew months ago reporting that Bliss K. Thorne, as in Ted to us, received his bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth at its 203rd Commencement Exercises last June. The release continues, "A member of the Class of 1938 ... he dropped out of college during his senior year with about one semester's work left to do. There followed a career with The New York Times on its editorial staff, public relations director of an aviation company, the editorship of an aviation Magazine and public relations with Pan American Airways. In 1971 he returned to Hanover....

"During the two years he worked for Dartmouth Mr, Thorne picked up the threads of his Collegiate career and gradually amassed enough courses to satisfy his long-deferred degree requirements. And so the ranks of the graduates of 1973 at Dartmouth included one well-seasoned member." Well-seasoned indeed! Congratulations, Ted.

Sad, as such news always is, is word of AlecBehr's death at his home in Colorado on August 16. The sympathy of his classmates has been conveyed to his widow. Alec's obituary appears elsewhere in this issue.

It was just about a year ago that we were all shocked by word of Larry Hull's sudden passing. Subsequent, and heartwarming, news comes from Larry's brother Steve '45. Steve's note enclosed a copy of a letter to him from Larry's former secretary, Miss Lee L. Seib, advising him that Larry's oil business associates in Michigan were planning a tribute to him on October 2 and that as part of the tribute they were establishing a scholarship to be called the Lawrence C. Hull Petroleum Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded each year to some deserving young man (or woman) who would like to further his career in petroleum marketing. Any of us who might like to make a contribution should addresss it to Mr.J.E. Truesdell Sr., c/o J. Austin Oil Co., Flint, Mich.

Steve closed his note as follows, "Tell '38 the Hull name is very alive with seven male cousins . . . Not to mention the Highmark kids, who are my wife's 2nd cousins."

Bud Walls, in case you missed July's "Give a Rouse," is now vice president, agency administration, for Connecticut Mutual Life. Through the years CML has promoted Bud to positions in several agencies across the country, thereby enabling him to be active for the College as president of the Los Angeles Club, chairman for the central Connecticut area in the Capital Gifts Campaign, and president of the General Alumni Association, to name a few.

Always-welcome word from Jim Cotter reports the wedding of his son Bob to Janet Blue on September 1. He also mentioned that he'd accepted Reunion Chairman Carl Von Pechmann's call for him to be "Food & Drink Chairman."

Further plans for our 35th next June were discussed at our class executive committee meeting the morning before the Penn game. In connection with a Class Gift to Dartmouth in honor of that Reunion you've all received the letter to the Class of September 12 over the signatures of PaulUrion, Dawk Dawkins, and Bob Hallock, class president, class giving chairman, and class agent, respectively. It is a thoughtful and a thought-provoking letter. Please give it the earnest consideration it deserves.
