and in accordance with an understanding reached with William H. King Jr. '63 who submitted a resolution on Indian symbol usage at the June meeting of the Alumni Council, the ALUMNI MAGAZINE is expanding on its coverage in the July issue (p. 13) to include the full text of King's motion and the voting record of each Council member.
In transmitting this request Stanley C. Smoyer '34, President of the Alumni Council, said, "I think it should be recognized that, for many Councilors, the vote on Bill King's motion was not a simple matter of "yes" or "no." Councilors were influenced by many different motivations and were faced by the not uncommon problem of attempting to represent the views of their constituencies, responding to their own consciences, and acting in accordance with what they perceived to be the best interests of the College."
The Resolution
"Be it resolved that the Dartmouth Alumni Council herewith expresses its opinion that the Indian symbol represents a sense of honor, pride and tradition to the alumni of the College and that because of this sense and the continuing and laudible commitment of the College to the education of Native Americans through all phases of the Native American Program at Dartmouth, the use of the Indian Symbol should not be diminished but instead ought to be encouraged, if used in a tasteful and dignified manner, consistent with the highest principles of the College and with the deepest respect to Dartmouth's Indian heritage."
