This report details the extraordinary achievements for the 1974 60th Anniversary Alumni Fund Campaign. There are many highlights including these:
1 - A record total of $3,836,273, some $86,000 above our challenging goal and $590,529 over what was raised last year.
2 - A two percent gain in alumni participation (58% vs 56% in 1973), reversing a persistent decline since 1957.
3 - An all-time reunion gift record of $220,098 by the Class of 1938 on its 35th reunion, and an all-time record among non-reunion classes of $80,936 achieved by the Class of 1935.
4 - A record total of $7,617 by the youngest class, 1973, coming from 346 donors.
5 - New contributor records set by a majority of younger alumni classes who were chiefly responsible for the two percent gain in overall alumni participation.
The $250,000 Challenge Fund, put up by a group of anonymous alumni, was over-subscribed with 7,751 alumni increasing their gifts this year plus 2,891 gifts from alumni who did not contribute in 1973.
The Dartmouth Parents Fund, led for the third consecutive year by David A. Winer, reached a record total of $92,481 from 1,347 donors. Memorial gifts, honoring deceased alumni, were received from 2,019 widows, relatives and friends for a total of $210,367, while corporate matching gifts came from 2,115 alumni for a record total of $300,931.
The twelve reunion classes, sparked by 1938, contributed a record total of $1,283,825 - a new high for this program in its fourth year. The 50-year Class of 1924 raised $185,506, while 1934, for its 40th reunion, contributed $182,748. The Class of 1939 and 1940 had fine 35th reunion totals of $151,477 and $150,781 respectively, and the 15-year Class of 1958 chalked up an amazing campaign total of $120,428.
During the past two years of my fund chairmanship our annual giving program has raised over $7-million of unrestricted current use funds to help the College meet its operating budget. This impressive and important total results from the dedicated and thoughtful volunteer work by some 4,000 alumni who serve each year as Head Agents, Regional Agents, Class Agents. Reunion Giving Chairmen and Committee members and Memorial Gift solicitors. Behind these frontline workers are an enthusiastic and hard-working Alumni Fund Committee and a fine staff in Hanover. Most important is the understanding and generosity of over 20,000 men and women of Dartmouth whose annual gifts pour into Hanover each year as the life-blood of the College. It has been a great privilege to serve this cause, and I turn the Alumni Fund over to my successor, Charles Hood '51, with full confidence that the campaigns ahead will be even better.
