One of the warming experiences of a class secretary (especially one who lives in New England during the winter of 1974) is to receive newsy Christmas cards from classmates. One such was from Hap and Pat Johnston which reviewed their busy '73 activities with one startling item - the birth of their first great-grandson. How many other great-grandchildren are there in the 1926 family?
Sunny Tilton was recently elected to the board of directors of Avco Corp. He is senior partner in the law firm of Tilton Erskine & Berkeley in Worcester, Mass., former board chairman of Worcester Pressed Steel Co., and presently a director of Persons-Majestic Mfg. Co., R. H. White Construction Co., and George F. Blake, Inc.
An award for merit from the American Association for State and Local History was received by Howard Rice of Brattleboro, Vt., for the book on the Revolutionary War that he coauthored with Mrs. John Nicholas Brown of Providence, R.I. This was the third honor for the two authors; their book having won a Certificate of Merit from the State of Rhode Island Bicentennial Commission as well as the Gilbert Chinard Prize awarded by the Society for French Historical Studies and Institute Francais de Washington.
Francis Pan retired from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and simultaneously took up new duties as advisor to the Chinese Language Authority and Controller of Translation Development in the Hong Kong Government. As such he will continue in a field of work in which he has been closely associated for some time and in which he has distinguished himself with his accomplishments.
Ritchie and Betty Smith have hit the trail again - this time sharing with their daughter and son-in-law a return safari in Africa. Hopefully this means more wonderful pictures for some future class gathering such as were enjoyed at the 45th Reunion.
It was college news in the December AlumniMagazine that Carle Blunt was presented the Dartmouth Alumni Award at the annual Club Officers Weekend banquet, and 1926 is proud of all that Carle has done for Dartmouth to win this honor.
Bill Willard's grandson is a member of the Class of 1976 and will be graduating from Dartmouth at the time of our 50th Reunion.
When Hub Harwood was ir, Washington recently he chatted with Marianne McConnaughey (widow of Robert K.) and learned that son Robert '60 is a practicing attorney in Washington and that son John '67 is a major in the U.S. Army, assigned to the Dental Corps in Baltimore. Marianne continues as a commissioner on the Board of Immigration Appeals.
Semi-retirement permitted Courtney andMarge Brown to visit Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Russia last summer, and now they commute between their new home in Treasure Cay, Bahamas, and Scarsdale, N.Y., where they recently purchased a condominium. Courtney continues as a professor of Columbia Graduate School of Business (having retired as Dean of the school). He edits the Columbia Journal of Business and sits on boards of several national corporations.
In Tulsa, Ariz., Ed and Maggie McClintock have taken an active part in the project of establishing a mission by St. Philips In The Hills Church to which they belong. The mission, known as The Chapel of St. Alban, is on a tenacre tract, was recently dedicated and will serve the growing congregation of St. Philips in another section of Tulsa.
Ed Raisbeck keeps unretired in Darien, Conn., in the business of searching out executive talent for the merchantile trade. Woodchopping has kept him busy during off hours, but a more likely answer for the energy crisis will be a return trip to Sanibel Island, Fla.
1926 congratulates Hal Marshall on his marriage to Mrs. Caroline P. McLean on December 29 in the Erwin Chapel of the Church in New Britain, Conn. The wedding ceremony was performed by Mrs. McLean's son who is also Hal's son-in-law, the Rev. J. Alan McLean. After a trip to Europe and a visit to Florida, the Marshalls will be at home about April 1 at Hilltop Place, New London, N.H.
A welcome Christmas card from MorryStorer tells of his and Gretchen's retirement home at Swan Lake, Fla., where they are enjoying life with four Labrador retrievers, a tennis court, and holiday visits of children and grandchildren. Morry retired from the University of Florida where he was a professor for more than 25 years.
When Charlie Starrett came on from California last fall for his first Harvard and Yale games since graduation, he and Mary visited his sister-in-law, Ruth Starrett, in Athol, Mass., the home town of the Starrett family. The local reporter for the Worcester Telegram knew he had a good story when he learned about Charlie's visit and promptly produced an 8-column feature story with headline, "Legendary Film Star, Durango Kid, visits birthplace in Athol." The story did Charlie justice, covering the high spots of his acting career and home life. Smoke Signals will give further details.
