Alumni Council Honors Judson Pierson '33

Jud Pierson '33 was given the Alumni Award at the annual dinner of the Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley on April 11. J. Michael McGean '49, Alumni Council secretary, made the presentation with this citation:

JUDSON TITUS PIERSON '33

A review of your Alumni Records file points up one important question for which no answer is provided. You have served as a board member of your churches in Plainfield and Westfield, New Jersey, Post Mills, Vermont, and Hanover; of the YMCA in Plainfield and Westfield and on the YMCA National Council; as a trustee of the Community Chest of Westfield; on the planning boards of Westfield and Fairlee, Vermont; as chairman of the Hanover Recreation Study Committee; and as Justice of the Peace of Fairlee.

The question is - was this service done as a partial payment of your debt to society for your felonious underwater assaults as a member of the Dartmouth varsity water polo team or in deep gratitude that you had not been fatally assaulted by your opponents? Really, it is clear to everyone that neither is the case - that you have served your communities as a dedicated member of society. There is still a question however. How did a nice guy like you ever get into a wicked sport like water polo?

Your service to the College and your Class has been no less distinguished than your community achievements. You have been an assistant class agent, class secretary for five years, and Class Bequest and Estate Planning Chairman since 1968. You were president of the Bequest and Estate Planning Association and were active in the Third Century Fund Campaign. In addition you have served Dartmouth Clubs of New Jersey and the Upper Valley.

In lasting appreciation of these outstanding achievements, and in grateful recognition of your continuing loyalty and vigorous leadership, we give you the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
