Over the years the Alumni Magazine has carried several pictures of Carl Gray on skis. In January last he was one of seven Dartmouth alumni taking part in the 11th Annual Sun Valley Ski Club Reunion. Now once again we have a picture of him on skis. This one however is different. In April 1975 Carl had a complete hip prothesis. The accompanying picture which was taken in January 1976, nine months after the operation, should be mighty encouraging to those of you who have experienced or are contemplating this remarkable surgical procedure.

It seems appropriate to recall here briefly some of Carl's accomplishments other than skiing. An officer of many industrial and engineering organizations, listed in Who's Who inAmerica, a trustee of three colleges, and active in community affairs, Carl has been meeting for over 30 years with civic groups and associations in the business world, urging people to speak up and proclaim the role free enterprise has played in bringing to us all the highest level of accomplishment and standard of living the world has ever known.

In 1973 at the request of North Carolina Senator Jesse A. Helms a commentary titled "While We Sleep" made by Carl on Raleigh, N.C. T.V. station WRAL, was printed in the Congressional Record. It is too long to be reported in this column so I am sending it to Ike Phillips hoping he will find space for it in Skiddoo. It's well worth your attention.

We haven't had news from Howie Sherman since 1958. I'm happy therefore to have the following from him via Babe Miner: "I have run the full gamut from branch banking to real estate and last but not least operated the Cape Cod Country Store in West Dennis for a number of years. Enjoyed it all but finally the old heart gave out so led me to retire after two of them. Occasionally run into a couple of the boys but being a bit restricted do not get around to any great extent. My last attack was on the way up to the 50th. Got as far as the Wilmington, Deleware Memorial Hospital where I .had a month's stay. Sorry to have missed it all as I know what an experience it would have been after so many years. However am still able to accomplish a number of things for which I am very thankful."

Babe has had other recent brief reports: - from Phil DeBerard who writes: "Ella and I are great-grandparents six times. Anne Marie, daughter of Richard and Terry Brown, was born July 28, 1975 in Deland, Fla. Our grandson Phil DeBerard III was graduated in law from U. of Florida in 1975, passed his bar examination, and was accepted into the Florida Bar. He married Laura Allison last November. I grew all the orchids used at the wedding."

Ed Snyder says: Ruby and I returned from our sojourn in Florida in July 1973. We spent an enjoyable two and half years there. Since returning to Joplin I have been hospitalized three times, a hernia in 1973, a double cataract in 1974, and a retina separation in 1975. Otherwise have enjoyed good health. Together with Ruby's brothers and their families we visited in West Acton, Mass., and helped celebrate the "Shot Heard Around the World" at the Concord Bicentennial. Had a nice drive through New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. We are now getting ready to go to Oklahoma City to help celebrate my Law Class Golden Reunion.

Vic Barney's wife Mary writes that Vic is still in a nursing home and very ill.

Ralph Emerson says: "We have been living in Sarasota for about two years and enjoying it. As you know we have an active Dartmouth Club here. We visit frequently with Sherm and Bert Clough and Roger and Ruth Billings."

For much too long I have had in my active file a news story from the Wellesley Townsman about Bob McMillan and the National Badminton Association. Some 40 years ago Bob, Don Wilbur '24, and other enthusiasts organized the association and Bob was elected secretary-treasurer. He still has a prized collection of badminton memorabilia and has dug up enough facts about the game to produce a very readable and impressive article, celebrating the 40th anniversary, which was published last November in Badminton-U.S.A., the association magazine. Proudly displayed is a lifetime pass admitting Bob free of charge to all badminton tournaments.

Recently distributed by the Alumni Fund Committee is the annual "In Memoriam" booklet. It lists the names of deceased alumni who have been remembered through contributions to the Alumni Fund. The program has grown considerably over the years and continues to be an important part of the total Alumni Fund. In 1975 approximately $200,000 came from memorial gifts. A total of 78 men of the 1923 class were memorialized in this way - by widows, friends, classmates or others - often by more than one.

A balmy February 25 led Connie and me to a belated trip to Hanover - hoping against hope some of the snow sculptures would still be recognizable. They were not! - nothing much left but soot-flaked piles of snow and ice. Another disappointment! We had hoped to see the famed botanical gardens on the roof of the Life Sciences building. It was closed for the day! We understand this is a must for anyone interested in growing plants - but check by telephone if you plan a special trip.

Hanover was wet and muddy on an early 60-degree day but it looked great even then, saddened as we were to find a fire-wrecked and boarded up Tanzis' - that was! What did cheer us up considerably was a bottle of beer and a fabulous "Rueben" sandwich at the Inn Bar. Try one sometime!
