March 29: Gary Walters, basketball coach of the year in New England, resigns (with Dartmouth contract unfulfilled) to coach at Davidson. April 4: Walters, disenchanted with Davidson after one week ("emotionally my heart was still at Dartmouth") is rehired after complicated negotiations in Hanover. "I've discovered," he said, "that I'm not a 'big time' [basketball] guy."
