Our small club has had a busy and a rather different but, we believe, a successful season.
We boast that out of a mailing list of 115 we have 79 dues-paying members or 68.6 per cent of our list. Because of our floating population of northerners, it is perennially difficult to keep our list current, but out undeliverable notices are minor.
Our formal season opened in October with a sound film of Scenes of Early Sarasota, an excellent presentation of old still pictures produced with music and color to give the illusion of a moving picture. This attracted a total of 41, including wives (somehow the girls seem to shy away from Football Highlights).
As a change from our usual moonlight sail around the Bay, advantage was taken of Sarasota County's picnic facilities at Turtle Beach on Siesta Key for a "Wing-Ding." This caught the early returnees on November 6 for a total of 76. A repeat by popular demand is in the works for this fall.
With the holidays out of the way, we chose January for a return to the Holiday Inn at Lido Beach. We picked up more snowbirds and enter-tained them with the music of the Riverview High School Kiltie Pep Band augmented by their Highland Dancers. Here again, attendance was over 70.
Our final formal event was our annual luncheon meeting in March, when we secured the facilities of the elegant new Hyatt House. In addition to election of officers (the entire slate was reelected with the addition of George Klein'28 as assistant treasurer), Mike McGean '49, Secretary of the College, presented the Alumni Award to our Bob Hardy '25 for his dedication to the College over a span of many years.
This time 115 turned out, a record for us and a tribute to Mike whose talk was timely, colorful, and somewhat nostalgic. The attendance prize again went to the Class of 1930 with 20 members there. Our size and treasury prohibiting a meaningful contribution to the Scholarship Fund, we voted to add $ 1.50 to annual dues.
A major portion of our club life is in the informal luncheons held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month when during the height of the season we have been averaging 20 attendees. As a recent guest from '73 wrote after one of the luncheons, "The best part about Dartmouth is that it has a true family spirit - wherever you go, you'll always feel at home in the company of other Dartmouth men." We believe it!
