THE business of learning as usual — in Hanover — in the summer? Absurd! Classes in July, finals in August probably seem a contradiction in terms to pre-year-round-operation alumni, but academic demands and extra-curricular activities jostle one another for the student's time in the summer just about as they normally do in traditional term-times — as these photographs taken in recent weeks by Adrian Bouchard and Nancy Wasserman '77 tell better than 17,000 words.
Most undergraduates, finding a summer term in residence inevitable, come to enjoy it. Many return for an unrequired repeat performance. With fewer students on campus, the pace tends to be a little less hectic, library books more readily available, facilities — other than tennis courts — less crowded. Alumni are in town again in greater numbers than at other seasons, with the exception of football weekends. Summer Carnival's "Olympiade" of frisbees and foot-races substitutes for Winter's snow sculptures, fraternity bashes move outdoors, sun competes a shade more often with study for attention, but booking in the 1902 Room, 12:30 REP, the Players, and exhibitions in Hopkins Center galleries go on as usual. And it still rains now and again.
