Thanks to the new football schedule requiring an Ivy League competitor at the beginning of an early season, '46 class activities got off to a fast start this year. About 50 classmates returned to Hanover for the Princeton game in midSeptember to enjoy our informal fall minireunion and, in spite of marginal weather, seemed pleased that they had made the journey. Bob and Jackie Kimball, our usual great hosts, opened their property (every inch) to the thundering herd before and after the game and a goodly number further enjoyed the occasion out at Reg and Nancy Pierce's Inn over Friday and Saturday nights.

We also had an especially good attendance for a class executive committee meeting called by our fearless leader, Jack Whitman. Eighteen members were on hand and applauded enthusiastically a report submitted by Treasurer Don Furber indicating not only solvency but a modest surplus. As a result, class dues will hold the line and we hope to be able to continue with occasional small projects as gifts to the College. In this respect, everyone was most pleased with the committee's recent effort resulting in the giving and planting of 40 white pines as a border between the Thompson Arena parking lot and Chase Field. It is a modest effort, but I think a most appropriate and lasting memento. There will be a suitable plaque installed and possibly in a later issue an appropriate picture.

The executive committee also congratulated Jim Lynch and his group for a good effort on last year's fund drive. Jim was naturally disappointed in just missing the total dollar goal but there was one important bright spot which indicated some real effort. Jim's team brought in 79 new givers, which is a most healthy increase. Offsetting this was a loss of 48 regular givers.

Communication with our good friend Al Quirk in the Admissions Office indicates 7 legacies in the Class of 1981. This is about half the number of progeny in recent classes but I guess it is about time we evidenced a drop-off.

Anyone who has read my column over the last few years knows that I champion those who have the gumption to start new careers. A great letter from our past president Dave Weld adds a name to the list of more courageous classmates. He says, "After 29 years at the same banana stand with a prominent lumber wholesale company, I left with my New Jersey partner who had logged 22 years with the same firm and we formed our own company, Weld & Whitaker Wood Products, Inc. in Princeton, N.J. Statistics say that over 50 per cent of all new businesses fail within the first year. We are winding up our 14th month and so far so good. I have had more than one advisor offer me the free information that you have got to be out of your skull to change horses at 52." I saw both Dave and Jean over Princeton weekend and it looks as though the change is agreeing with them.

How about some more interesting stories of change? There must be many more classmates who have recently made a similar break.
