March 1977

Dartmouth is about to mount a five-year fund drive with a goal of $145-160 million. Most of the money will be used for general endowment, but there also are specific components of about $25 million for the hard-pressed Medical School, $11 million for endowment and new facilities at the Hopkins Center, and smaller amounts for Tuck and Thayer schools.

The goal, which the Trustees in late January approved as a "range," represents about double what the College would receive through its normal fund-raising efforts over a five-year period. It includes approximately $25 million expected to be raised by the Alumni Fund between 1977 and 1982. By comparison, the Third Century Fund was conducted over three and a half years, from 1967 to 1970, and raised $53 million. In the same period of time another $26 million was donated to Dartmouth through normal channels.

In announcing the campaign, President Kemeny said that work on a "nucleus fund" of $15-20 million would begin immediately. This amount is expected to be raised from a group of approximately 90 people, including Trustees, former Trustees, and overseers of the associated schools and the Hopkins Center. Kemeny said that a "successful nucleus fund solicitation" is necessary before work goes ahead on the rest of the campaign. Norman E. McCulloch Jr. '50, a Trustee and a former chairman of the Alumni Fund, has agreed to serve as chairman of the new campaign.
