In this picture John C. Parish '36 is presenting to Israel's Golda Meir the Boy Scouts' Silver World Award, the highest that Scouting in America bestows outside the United States. Parish's duties as International Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America have taken him to most of the 112 nations in which Scouting flourishes and have led to meetings with many heads of state. He has presented awards to the King of Norway, the Sultan of Indonesia, the Shah of Iran, and the Queen of Denmark as well as to Meir.

Parish himself holds nearly all the coveted awards bestowed by Scouting on its own. His 55 years of devotion to the program have earned him the Silver Beaver, the Silver Antelope, the Silver Buffalo, the Bronze Wolf, the Distinguished Eagle, the Silver Tamaraw (Philippines), the St. George (Colombia), and the Emerald Flower (China). "Scouting is the best program available for developing character and building citizenship in young people," says Parish. "It helps to bring us all closer together and perhaps contributes to the objectives we all espouse - a more tranquil, peaceful, and understanding world."
